Things have come a long way since the good old analogue black and white T.V set. Nowadays most people will not settle for anything less than the clear viewing capability of a HDTV which stands for high definition television. If you are new to the market then there are a few things that need to be understood about this type of television. The following part of the article explains the different types and the differences between each type. Not all HDTV’s are created the same so it is good to be armed with some basic information before buying one.
There are different technologies involved in each type. We will be discussing the 3 main types available in the market today. The first one is the Plasma TV. This type uses Plasma display panels to give images on the screen. This type uses a chemical that is present in the screen, in each pixel actually, to produce the necessary colors and images. Compared to other types of TV’s including LCD TV’s it does not rely on a light source in order to produce pictures or images. This also why Plasma technology produces some of the best color and picture among all different types of TV’s.
The disadvantage of plasma technology is that over time it will get what is known as “screen burns” on the TV. These are markings which appear on the TV. As time goes by the problem gets worse and it cannot be repaired. The next type of HDTV is the LCD TV. This type of TV uses 2 electronic parts to produce pictures on the screen. It will use a back light unit called CCFL tubes and also a liquid crystal display. It is these 2 parts that will give the required brightness and color. Unlike plasma TV’s, lack of brightness can be repaired and it will usually only cost a few hundred dollars. The “crispness” of the image will not be as good as a plasma TV but on the other hand it also costs less to purchase.
LED back light LCD TV is the next one on the list. This is the next step up in LCD HDTV technology. Instead of making use of CCFL tubes it uses LED or Light Emitting Diode. The advantage of LED is that it uses less power but is more costly to make. So far we have discussed the 3 basic types of HDTV’s on the market. The next part, the specifications will be discussed. The main thing to look out for is the amount of resolution the screen has. Most HDTV’s come with 1920X1080P or higher. 1920 indicates the amount of pixels and 1080 indicates the number of rows. The bigger the resolution numbers the clearer the picture will be. The next thing to look out for is brightness. Some TV’s allow for a higher brightness, but putting it on a high brightness setting is not good for color. It will give what is known as a “washed out effect”.
